Northrop Grumman Corporation | Redstone Gateway

 

In April, Northrop Grumman Corporation welcomed employees into their new two-building campus at Redstone Gateway, a mixed-use office and technology park in Huntsville, Alabama located next to Redstone Arsenal. The 260,000 sq ft campus is home to over 1,000 Northrop Grumman employees, and includes office space, program management and engineering design space, an integration laboratory, a data center, and a 350-person auditorium.

 

The Business Interiors Construction and Architectural Services team worked with Robins & Morton, the general contractor for the project on behalf of Corporate Office Properties Trust (COPT), and provided a full Falkbuilt solution for the project’s extensive glass fronts. Powers Brown Architecture was the architect for the project.

Space Camp Operations Center

Space Camp Operations Center

 

Huntsville’s U.S. Space & Rocket Center hosted a ribbon-cutting last week for the opening of the new Space Camp Operations Center.

Business Interiors is proud to have worked on this 40,000-square-foot project, having provided the furniture solutions for the classrooms, labs, private offices, workstations, and common areas. The BI team worked directly with the client and in collaboration with Fuqua & Partners Architects, the A+D firm, on the project.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and Commerce Secretary Greg Canfield joined Space and Rocket Center officials and other local leaders to celebrate the occasion. The Operations Center houses all program operations, providing an exceptional educational resource for campers who come from 150 countries and all 50 states.

“Space Camp provides a unique opportunity to learn about scientific disciplines in a hands-on, interactive way, and through this program we are igniting our young people with a passion for discovery and filling their minds with great opportunities,” Governor Ivey said.

Indian Springs School | Dining Hall

Indian Springs School, located just outside of Birmingham, Alabama, is an independent school recognized nationally as a leader in boarding and day education for grades 8–12. Their new Kayser Samford Community Commons officially opened in December 2022. The goal was to create more than just a dining hall. The school wanted to provide a setting where students could organically socialize, dine, attend school events, and use the space for a variety of activities between meals. Ultimately, they sought an environment where people could naturally engage in teamwork.

Furnishing the Social Hub
BI provided solutions that successfully accomplished this goal. We offered different seating arrangements, ranging from varying seating and table heights to an assortment of seating configurations. We specially selected materials and textures for the space. These variations offer students a place to gather for mealtimes as well as a social hub between meals. Students can use the space to collaborate on team projects, work heads-down on individual assignments, or simply take time near the on-campus lake.

Design and Durability Principles
The design of the new Community Commons seamlessly blends the indoors and outdoors with natural materials, large windows, and an earthy color scheme. We added wood finishes to the small products and specified solid colors of durable laminate for the large round tables. Due to the high-traffic nature of student environments, we selected robust materials and finishes.

We chose textiles using calm, earthy colors, purposefully avoiding the typically bright or collegiate finishes associated with student environments. Correct finishes and product durability held equal importance for the outdoor space. With a dramatic view of the lake, we chose muted finish selections to avoid competition with Mother Nature.

The overall result is a furniture solution that provides students and guests with a variety of indoor and outdoor engagement opportunities. Furthermore, the finish palette complements the architecture and the surrounding landscape.

Pen Air | Corporate Headquarters Expansion

Back in January 2020, Pensacola-based Pen Air Federal Credit Union celebrated the groundbreaking of their new Corporate Campus Headquarters. This new building stands located directly behind their previous Corporate Office.

The project moved quickly. By January 2022, the building was finished, employees were at their desks, and the furniture was installed. The teams involved were thankful that the large project was finally completed!

The newest corporate office for Pen Air employees consists of three floors, nearly 50,000 square feet of conditioned space, and a 2,400 square foot rooftop terrace. The office has extensive amenities: private offices, workstations, common areas, conference rooms, training rooms, and both indoor and outdoor furniture.

BI team members worked with both Pen Air and DAG Architects Inc. to make the final project a stunning success.
