NewCircle: Adult & Teen Eating Disorder Treatment Center

Located in Birmingham, Alabama, NewCircle offers a full continuum of care for teens and adults struggling with eating disorders. The center opened in October 2025. Their philosophy drives whole-person, trauma-informed care. They deliver this care in a setting that feels like a supportive home, not an institution.

The treatment center occupies a former assisted living facility in historic Highland Park. This required a complete transformation. Business Interiors partnered with the design team at KPS Group to address the unique furnishing challenge of this specialized behavioral health environment. The paramount goal was to source furniture solutions that were aesthetically warm, cozy, and residential. These solutions also needed to meet the rigorous requirements for safety, durability, and functionality in a healthcare setting.

We specified furniture with soft lines, comfortable textiles, and warm color palettes in the residential and common areas. This immediately reduced the clinical atmosphere. The choices created spaces that feel safe and encourage residents to relax and build community. This careful selection process balanced therapeutic design principles—such as tamper-resistance and robust construction—with comfort and dignity.

A central focus of the treatment program is the community kitchen and dining hall. Here, residents are encouraged to prepare and share meals together. For this critical area, Business Interiors provided highly durable, yet inviting, residential-style seating and tables. These pieces reinforce positive social interaction and a return to daily routine.

Through intentional furniture specification, Business Interiors helped NewCircle successfully transform the structure. The resulting environment truly embodies their mission: it breaks isolation, rebuilds trust, and supports every resident on their journey toward recovery.

Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins State Veterans Home

The Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins State Veterans Home is Alabama’s fifth skilled-care nursing and memory care project. The 182,000 square-foot building accommodates 174 residents. Williams Blackstock Architects created the contemporary farmhouse-inspired design. The vision was to honor veterans with a serene, home-like environment, incorporating Southern charm and expansive porches. Business Interiors delivered the essential furnishing products. This guaranteed every area achieved clinical functionality while embracing a welcoming, non-institutional aesthetic.

We focused on promoting well-being and community within the Home’s extensive amenities. The Town Center acts as the central hub, featuring a grand stone fireplace. A main corridor, called “Main Street,” connects key amenity settings. Business Interiors furnished these diverse public zones. These include a full dining hall, a fully appointed library, and a lively sports bar. Our selections were designed to withstand heavy use. They also promote social engagement and community life among the residents.

Crucially, the design fosters a sense of intimate community. Each residential “wing” includes two inviting living rooms and a kitchenette. This offers smaller groups of veterans private rooms for relaxation and socializing outside of the main Town Center. We prioritized residential warmth and ease for these spaces. We selected highly durable, healthcare-grade furniture and materials. These meet the stringent demands of long-term care without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. Business Interiors delivered thoughtful and resilient furnishings throughout the 174 private rooms and all common zones. This helped realize a beautiful, functional setting. The state’s veterans receive exceptional care in an environment that reflects the honor and respect they have earned.

Jefferson County Medical Examiner Office

The Jefferson County Medical Examiner Office provides vital forensic services to the county. The move to a new, state-of-the-art $30 million complex represented a crucial modernization effort and replaced a hopelessly small, constrained facility. Business Interiors was tasked with implementing furniture solutions that matched the precision, efficiency, and quiet dignity required by the facility’s demanding operations.

BI partnered closely with the project team, including Poole & Company and Doster Construction. This collaboration ensured furniture selections supported both the facility’s highly technical functions and the sensitive needs of its administrative spaces—making this far from an everyday office furniture project.

The scope encompassed a wide range of environments, including 15 private offices, 37 workstations, two conference rooms, a training room, the lobby, and the break room. Select work also extended into highly specialized areas such as autopsy rooms, coolers, and X-ray rooms, where durable benches were specified.

Light, timeless finishes were selected to bring a sense of calm to an environment where staff regularly work in difficult situations. BI maximized functionality in private offices with U-shaped desks and equipped the specialized specimen storage room with mobile high-density shelving to ensure peak organization in a critical zone. From the lobby and training room to the collaborative outdoor patio, the BI team provided durable, high-performance furniture solutions tailored to the facility’s unique demands.

The overall approach centered on delivering professional furnishings that support staff focus while maintaining the dignified atmosphere essential for sensitive consultations.

The modern, timeless architecture—highlighted by beautiful wood ceilings in open areas—creates a sophisticated and appropriate environment for the facility’s critical mission. Ultimately, Business Interiors ensured the space supports both the operational needs of the staff and the experience the facility demands.

Auburn University’s Hood McPherson Building

Opening in May 2024, Auburn University renovated a historic building in downtown Birmingham. The new Hood McPherson Building is a 44,000-square-foot urban campus. It provides a new home for two key departments: the Harbert College of Business and the College of Architecture, Design and Construction (CADC).

Williams Blackstock Architects was the A+D firm on the project. The project was recognized at the 2025 IIDA Alabama IDIE Awards. It received “Best of Education (Higher Ed)” and “Best in Show” awards for its superb work.

The Business Interiors team partnered with AU and WBA. They provided furnishings for many of the open areas. The goal was to create a state-of-the-art academic environment.

BI’s furniture scope for the six-floor project focused on a transparent and adaptable environment for students. The main areas included studio galleries, workshare open office spaces, classrooms, and collaborative rooms. The building’s design serves as a teaching tool. Exposed structural, mechanical, and electrical systems reinforce the CADC’s hands-on learning philosophy. The new campus connects students to Birmingham’s urban fabric. It shapes the future of design, construction, and business.

This award-winning project is a great example of combining the old with the new. We’re proud to have been a part of it.
